    It might help.
    But I have 22 Seasons of the simpsons
    Can I use this only
    I have had success using Mplayer with the w32codecs package installed from medibuntu. It includes the VP7 codec. You can also use MEncoder to transcode any Mplayer playable video into whatever you want. I'm converting a season of Simpsons I accidentally downloaded in VP7 into XVid4.

    Re: Can't play DVD format .avi's

    When I tried to play *.ts files in Movie Player in Ubuntu 12.10 (64-bit),
    I got the following message
    "python (v2.7) requires to install plugins to play media files of the following type: application/x-mpegts-private-section decoder."
    and then my computer would crash......
    The files wouldn't play at all in VLC!!!

    After a bit of search on the internet, I found a solution of sorts.
    Install Medibuntu as follows
    sudo -E wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update
    sudo apt-get install non-free-codecs
    <<then install ffmpeg - there seems to be different ways to install ffmpeg>>

    Open ffmpeg, and convert the *.ts file to a DVD PAL fullscreen or avi
    It can take a while, but once it is done, you can play the file in Movie player or VLC.

    I'm sure there is another way, but this worked for me
