Spanned Volume From Internal to External Storage

Is there a partitioning tool that can span a volume from an internal storage device (ie. HDD or SSD) to an external storage device (ie. USB flash drive or a an SD Card).

Why not just mount the external storage to a mount point (directory) on the Internal drive?

Because I have an old eeepc 900 that has a 4gb hard drive. The os take up a lot of the hard drive space so i don't have much space for applications. Since you can't install applications to a single directory in Linux this seemed like the best option for this old machine because the hard drives for it, mini pcie hard drives, are a little pricey for what you get.
