Terminal opens, but can't type in it.

New to 12.04, just upgraded from 10.04.

When I run the terminal, I can see the terminal window open, but can't input in it. I get no cursor blinking there either. I type but nothing appears. Obviously I can't get anywhere.

Is there a trick in 12.04 I'm not getting? Thanks in advance for any tips.

    Hi,

When you type your password in, you cannot see it -

It doesn't prompt me for my password. It's a black square. It has user@user-laptop:tilde in the title area. I tried inputting my password, still nothing appears. No prompts at all, just black. Ideas?

Uninstall the (gnome-terminal) and reinstall it. Go to the Software Center to do so. You can even install another terminal if you like.

Just a random stab in the dark, but I have noticed that I have actually click on the opened terminal to get the window focus. Then I can type in the terminal.

Good suggestions all. But it was in focus, and unresponsive to password entry.

It seems to have been some incompatibility of Unity and my setup (there were other issues as well). I installed Gnome Fallback, rebooted, selected Gnome Classic, and now Terminal behaves as it always has.

Now with Terminal available, I can troubleshoot the other issues - see you in those threads!

Try checking that the background and the text aren't the same colour.
