Hi everyone,

I am currently trying to install GTK 3.4.4 and I noticed something.

Often times, I find myself looking for software that I cant find in my Software Center (probably due to repos, but since I have a fully updated Ubuntu machine, I figure this should only account for a small portion of the packages). I resort to downloading a tar.gz file and using ./configure, make, make-install.

But yesterday I had some issues with dependencies and upon researching, I found that many people will strongly recommend against compiling from a source file.

I was just wondering why this is? And for libraries like GTK, whats the best way to compile it? I would like to use it with Anjuta.
