Hey, here is one idea regarding Google's entrance to Tablets with Nexus 7:

Apple has been suing Samsung and other Android vendors for a while and these vendors don't necessarily have the means to fight pack with the same ability.

This is hurting the Android business as well as stressing the partnership with Google.

Now that Google is in on it, they "could" be sued, but Apple isn't going to want to do that because Google has the means and, after watching the Oracle case, good lawyers to take them on (it WOULD be epic though...).

So by getting into the Tablet market they are effectively positioning themselves as a deterrent against Apple and these silly lawsuits.

This is good for Google because if vendors are more willing to sell Android devices readily, they may also be able to keep them up to date or improve Android as well as making some money for Google.

Google can also make money off of their own devices and have real-world feedback and data to improve upon the design with.

Not to mention, it helps get their view of what the future (cloud) should be like in the hands of more and more people.

I'm fairly sure Samsung is quite a big company.

As long as we are on the subject of Google, I found this quote in and article entitled "For Microsoft, It’s Not Just the Money Lost, It’s the Time, Too"
Microsoft spent five years trying to “catch” Google in the search market. It bought aQuantive. It did the deal with Yahoo. It renamed its search engine Bing and made a big deal of it. Yes, it did double its market share in search, to about 13%. But it did that by essentially taking Yahoo’s market share; it didn’t lay a glove on Google, which has 74% of the market.

Money is necessary but maybe not sufficient. Google probably has the software patents to fight Apple that Samsung, being a hardware company, doesn't.
