No correction is needed, howto's belong on the wiki.

I keep my howto valid/updated and have done since 2008
    Thank you.

it seems a bit weird to imply that editing is breaking or straining the forum and disabling it after 24 hours helps
Nobody is implying anything. The edits have been disabled due to spam. We have had bots post seemingly normal posts and the edit them much later with spam content.

As has been stated the wiki is for the howto, but a thread will remain on the forum for discussion.

Several members of the forum moderation team have repeated this message and I consider the matter closed. This policy is not going to change, I suggest you move on.

And yet from this confusion much good work has been done and Tutorials and Tips has been a positive force in the Ubuntu experience. It has always reminded me more than a little of the great essay by Eric S. Raymond 'The Cathedral and the Bazaar' where the virtues of such chaos were upheld. I hope those who are pushing these changes through have read and understood this essay and seen the relevance to the current situation.

So is this simply a matter of server space? The forum is running out of room?

I know that most people come to this forum for help. I tried Linux Mint and their forum was dead compared to this one. There are so many people on this forum
wanting to help people who use Ubuntu that it is staggering.

Look. It's simple. You still get your How-To.

You either edit an existing wiki or you make a new one. People either find the wiki (and it works or they post here asking why it didn't) or they ask a question in a forum and you or someone else directs them to the wiki and the help thread proceeds as it always has before.

I ported my stuff and changed the links in my signature.

Effectively, everything is the same -- except that your material is peer reviewed and redundancy is reduced.

This is just NOT earth shattering.

Sun Tzu's wisdom is not limited to use by old warriors like me.

Most of the complaints seem to me to be motivated by bruised egos. We all liked to get ours stroked by the fact that we had How Tos with our names attached and we liked the thank yous. Oh, well. Things change.

There needs to be a How-To about How-To edit the How-To.

    If i do one shall i do a How-To or a Wiki, or a Wiki on How-To do the How-to ?

    To quote Clavell:

"I truly believe that if our military and political leaders in recent times had studied the work of this genius.........."

I omitted the rest to avoid politics, but Clavell had a point

It has nothing to do with server space or script.

It has to do with what is the most appropriate format for documentation and how-tos.

Every solution has advantages and disadvantages and all documentation is only as good as the community that maintains it. You can find good forums and bad forums, good wiki and bad wiki, etc.

When you weight the advantages / disadvantages of wiki vs forums for documentation, wiki wins.

    For details see: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1949027

This endless debate and personal insults are counter productive.

If you would like to help with the wiki, great. There are people here who can help you learn to wiki.

If you are not going to do wiki, that is also up to you.

And also the Code of Conduct

    http://www.ubuntu.com/project/about-ubuntu/conduct

In particular the sections on colaboration apply. Documentation is a colaborative project. Individual work goes to private web pages, not the forums.

With that I think this thread has run it's course.

There are two mistakes one can make along the road to truth...not going all the way, and not starting.
