I rebuilt the package but I'm still not getting notifications.

I dunno what was wrong with notifications, but I made a .deb out of CVS build and notifications seem to work fine now.

I emailed Jonatan and the bad news is he hasn't touched the code for a year, and the server it was on crashed.

The good news is he says he'll have a look for it...

I take it Jonatan never found it?
