Please see the following quote from the xorg-edgers ppa:
I didn't bump into this issue as I use gnome shell.July 13th: Mesa currently has problems with unity where the launcher icons are invisible, it's suggested to hold mesa back to the 0529 version, stop using this PPA, or use another session such as gnome or unity-2d until it is fixed.
Unfortunately, this is currently not an option if you are using Unity (please see my previous post).
All seems to be fine with Unity 2D and Gnome Shell.
Also, the xorg-edgers ppa installs kernel 3.5.0-5.5 which still causes some issues.
What I did was to install all the upgrades from xorg-edgers + the 3.4.5 mainline kernel from here.
I now boot from 3.4.5 (no hangs/freezes/kernel panics with this version) and have the touchpad fully working.
thanks fab.head for your constant support and good advice, i now tried to install the updates from the xorg-edgers repo.
but for some reason these packages were held back:
libgl1-mesa-dri linux-headers-generic linux-imwhage-generic xserver-xorg-core xserver-xorg-input-evdev xserver-xorg-input-mouse xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
xserver-xorg-input-vmmouse xserver-xorg-input-wacom xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-cirrus xserver-xorg-video-fbdev xserver-xorg-video-intel
xserver-xorg-video-mach64 xserver-xorg-video-mga xserver-xorg-video-neomagic xserver-xorg-video-nouveau xserver-xorg-video-openchrome xserver-xorg-video-qxl
xserver-xorg-video-r128 xserver-xorg-video-radeon xserver-xorg-video-s3 xserver-xorg-video-savage xserver-xorg-video-siliconmotion xserver-xorg-video-sis
xserver-xorg-video-sisusb xserver-xorg-video-tdfx xserver-xorg-video-trident xserver-xorg-video-vesa xserver-xorg-video-vmware
Why were the held back? Shall i try to force them?
also, which of these kernels shall i install?
i'm running kubuntu 12.04 (x86_64 bit) with 3.2.0-26-generic
I would not try to force any package from this repo.
Please try to reload the repo's list a bit later, and see whether it works.
Also, I'd recommend to install ppa-purge as well. This way, you'll be able to revert to the standard packages if something goes pear shaped.
oh, but the fn-f2 didn't cause a kernel panic on 3.5.0-5 (maybe because wifi isn't working) instead it just enables and disables bluetooth instead.
is toggle bluetooth and wifi by fn-f2 a intented behavior or a bug? on 3.5.0-4 the f2 led represents the current bluetooth status, instead of wifi.
thanks so much for your help, fab.head
this really works for me, now right click and select copy (with scrolling) works as well.
you get so helpless and too dependend on those basic features, you start missing them when they're gone
One thing that doesn't work anymore, I don't know if it works for you, is the tapping. Usually when I tapped the touchpad it was like a click. Now I really have to press down the touchpad to click.
Anyone else noticed this behaviour?
this new laptop is sooo exciting despite all the work
another thing i just noticed, probably to do with the kernel update.
when I boot the laptop, KWallet starts quickly, but afterwards it takes a while till the touchpad becomes active. It also takes like 30 seconds or so until the startup sound appears. Then usually an error message appears that Synaptiks crashed...I wanted to take a screenshot but then I got logged out.
