the first method worked for me, i even have a @msn.com address and not @hotmail.com
I had never done this before, I don't use my msn account much at all. I decided to give it a try, only I wanted to use Thunderbird. I used the setup direct from the howto with my account information, it immediately downloaded the 87 messages I had on the server. Cool!

I get the WebDAV pay error as well.
"Unable to connect to POP server 127.0.0.1.
Error sending password: -ERR Hotmail said you must pay money to have WebDAV access
Please enter the POP password for *****@hotmail.com on host 127.0.0.1"
ill look for this "gotmail" project now... anyone else have any obvious/easy solutions to this problem besides a new different email service or program?
Nevermind... got going through a pop3server thing called "izymail.com" to receive my inbox messages.
I can't seem to send messages though... Evolution just hangs on the "send/receive mail" screen. It completes receiving inbound messages, but just stays @ 0% on outbound messages.
For "server" under server configuration I've tried
127.0.0.1:2500
127.0.0.7:2500
hotmail.com:2500
out.izymail.com:2500
all of them with server type "smtp", "server requires authentication" checked, no security, plain authentication, with my full email as the username.
anyone have any suggestions?
I was also curious, so i sniffed the traffic while connecting, and found some enlightening data in the TCP stream.
Connection: Keep-Alive
Authorization: Digest username="xxxxxxxx@msn.com", realm="Microsoft Passport", qop="auth", algorithm="MD5"
Although the user name is sent in the clear, the password authentication is encrypted. Albeit lightly. So, as long as you have a respectable password, you are in good shape.
Thanks to the original poster for an excellent how-to.
Thank you for this guide.
Downloading my messages in Evolution works fine. However, when I try to send messages I get the following message "Error while performing operation. Welcome response error. Operation now in progress". Outbound messages are stuck in the outbox.
I've used Hotmail for about 8 years or so but I recently "upgraded" it to Windows Live Mail. I've had my account for a long time and I'm not very keen on switching to a new one.
I guess I can't be the only one with this problem?

I was getting an error about needing to pay for webdav access but then I signed up for the Desktop Mail Live beta and I think it is ok for webdav access now. But now I'm getting another error in Evolution:
"Unable to connect to POP server 127.0.0.1.
Error sending password: -ERR Unable to find folder inbox on remote server"
Anyone know what this one is about?
