    install Brother MFC-J430W Printer

    Hello,
    2 1/2 months ago I bought a new Brother MFC-J430W printer because my other printer (a Cannon) did not work with Ubuntu.
    I am using Ubuntu 12.04, but have not successfully set up the printer. The computer recognizes the printer, but I have been too confused about what to install or how to do it to install the drivers.
    I have written to Brother, Ubuntu Forum and friends who have brother printers- no one answers my questions.
    Has any one out there installed this printer? I am sure it is rather simple, but the Brother Driver pages on their web site are grossly confusing to me.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thank you,
    Richard McDonald

    Are you going to use it as a wireless networked printer or attached to your pc?

    The first thing is to download appropriate drivers, again this will depend on how you want to set it up. Are you using Ubuntu 12.04 64 or 32 bit?

    I find installing the printer portion quite easy. Brother makes this script available which takes care of the 32 bit/64 bit concern:

    http://welcome.solutions.brother.com...rn.html#f00104
    I'll attach the installer script from Brother's web site. Just extract it somewhere you can find it again and run it as instructed in the above link. linux-brprinter-installer-1.0.4-1.gz.

    Installing the scanner is a little bit more of a pain. There are two issues with the scanner.

    • It requires editing a file for normal users (not sudo users) to be able to scan
    • The installer puts some files where they don't belong

    Also, to use the scanner over a network requires making the scanner known to the system via a command line command.

    Why does Brother use command line installation instead of a nice GUI? I had the same question. I asked here and the reply made perfect sense. CLI works the same in all distros and all versions.

    Ok I got the printer to work using these instructions on the brother official website:
    http://welcome.solutions.brother.com...ion_prn1a.html

    I installed the drivers using Gdebi

    now printing works great

    now how do I get the scanner to work?

    kurt, god bless his soul, did give you instructions in the post above yours;

    http://welcome.solutions.brother.com.../en/index.html

    there is Download scanner driver;

    then further down are instructions

    You can see: Instructions; and Scanner

    and a button for Driver install;

    click on this and you get screenshot 2 (also called brother_scanner_2)

    they appear to recommend

    sudo gedit /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules
    and that will open the file /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules for you to edit;

    Brother recommend you paste

    # Brother scanners
    ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"
    into this file: they say:

    Add the following two lines to the end of the device list. (Before the line "# The following rule will disable ..."):
    SAVE your additions; Close; re-start the computer;
