    Firefox 20 on Ubuntu 12.10

    Hi All,

I was wondering, will Firefox be upgraded to the latest release, 20.0, on Ubuntu 12.10? Or should I add the Firefox next PPA as described here:

    http://www.noobslab.com/2013/04/inst...in-ubuntu.html

Sorry if that's a daft question, I've been away from Ubuntu for a long time and just getting back into again.

    Really liking it so far!

    Rob

That PPA is for the Firfox BETA.

    https://launchpad.net/~mozillateam/+...e/firefox-next

It usually takes a couple of days before it shows up in the Ubuntu Software Updater.

There is a good chance that the last BETA (20.0~b7+build1-0ubuntu0.) is the same as the Final of Firefox v20.0 but it is probably better to wait for it to show up through the regular channels.

Thanks, that's great, exactly what I needed to know.

Out of interest, when is the cut off point for backports? I mean, once 13.04 is out, will new Firefox releases still get backported to 12.10?

I think you will find that even in ubuntu 10.04, which is about to lose support next month for the desktop version, firefox is still being updated and will probably get FF 20 in a day or two.

I believe this situation started once FF began its new quicker update schedule, and therefore the ppa for FF stable, which I used to use, became totally unnecessary.

    Wow!

...and what about the other 'major' apps like THunderbird, Libre Office etc? Do they all continue to get backported too?

To get some of the Backport Updates you may need to enable it in the Software Sources...

Thunderbird is usually updated around the same time as Firefox.

To get the latest Updates or version of LibreOffice it would probably be better to use the Official LibreOffice PPA...

To get the stable update of Firefox and ThunderBird a few days sooner, add the https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mozill...y/+archive/ppa.

    Hi All,

Thanks for the informative and helpful replies.

I'd forgotten that one of the best things about Ubuntu is the community

    Regards,

    Rob
