Re: [Server 12.04] 368 broken packages after a fresh install

Ubuntu tends to use apt-get rather than aptitude (I realise that there is some overlap).

Try the following commands to repair and update.
    Code:
    sudo apt-get --fix-broken install
    sudo dpkg --configure --pending
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Full system encryption with dual-boot —— Full Circle Magazine —— Problems with WINE?
In my day, we had the outdoors in which to run, play, and socialise. Now people use computers for that.

Sorry, I'm a bit confused. Your commands ran fine and showed no problem.

What specifically makes you think that you have broken packages?

Look at my first post: the aptitude screen shows a lot of packages marked with "iB" like
    Code:
    iB acpid
"iB" means Installed with broken dependencies.

    In addition aptitude states:
    Code:
Some dependencies of acpid are not satisfied:

    Hello, Ev'body...
I'm having some strangeness happen with aptitude too... I guess it's more precise to say I find aptitude strange...
Don't get me wrong-- I'm sure once I get used to it... I'll MUCH prefer apt to source-downloading, compiling, waiting... waiting... grabbing a sandwich... waiting... but for NOW... I'M stuck. Moderators-- please forgive me if I digress, I've read and re-read posts on apt to try to learn the package installer but I can't figure out what -I- have done in order to -undo-.

Ok... I'm fine with installing libsdl-sound1.2 but when I try... I get yet MORE depend flags...

    ian@puck:~$ sudo apt-get install -f libsdl-sound1.2

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
    libsdl-sound1.2 : Depends: libmikmod2 (>= 3.1.10) but it is not installable
Depends: libsmpeg0 but it is not installable
Depends: libspeex1 (>= 1.1.8) but it is not installable
Depends: libvorbisfile3 (>= 1.1.2) but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
    ian@puck:~$

OK... so I look at HELD pkgs:

    ian@puck:~$ sudo aptitude search ~ahold

I have to " >> bigheldpkgs.list " cause I gt 575 lines of pkgs that I don't know what to do with. Did skroo-up the install??

I've tried '--fix-broken install' and 'update' flags and I guess I... no... I know I don't know what to do now. I'm not used to aptitude yet... I'm just used to Old Slackware & Mandrake & Gentoo... This is my first UBUNTU Box... Where do I go? What do I look at? Suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!
    Respecftully, Ian

Well, Radom, I am not an expert; but I see that the commands I gave you finished fine. So, as far as I can tell, there is no problem.

Are you experiencing any problems that made you refer to aptitude? If so, please let me know, so I can understand better. If not, then frankly I wouldn't worry about it.

Well, in fact I'm not experiencing any problem so far.
Ok then, if something strange will happen I'll report it.
    Thank you very much!

Excellent. Please mark the thread as solved.

I just had a thought: how did you get the Aptitude screen in your first post? Let me know, and I'll try it on my machine to see what happens.

Simply type "aptitude" and it will bring up an ASCII menu that you can navigate.

My servers look just like his screen except without the "B"
