    Error: "cannot execute binary file"

    I'm new at Ubuntu. I have installed a program for astrophysics.

    When I try to use one of the commands of the program I'm getting the error like that;

    arnavisca@arnavisca-System-Product-Name:~$ powspec
    bash: /home/arnavisca/Desktop/heasoft-6.12/x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu-libc2.5/bin/powspec: cannot execute binary file

    How can I solve that?

    Just taking a shot in the dark here, trying running the command with sudo.

    Code:
    sudo <command>

    Post the output of the following command:

    $ uname -a

    EDIT:

    Also post for the following command

    $ ldd /home/arnavisca/Desktop/heasoft-6.12/x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu-libc2.5/bin/powspec

    You are trying to run a 64 bits binary on a 32 bit OS, you need to install Ubuntu x86_64, which is for 64 bits architecture.

    EDIT:

    You can download from here:

    Re: Error: "cannot execute binary file"

    Well, the binary is 64-bit, and your system is 32-bit, so you can't run it. Install a 64-bit system.

    Re: Error: "cannot execute binary file"

    I download the program in 32 bit. Can I solve the problem in this way.

    Now I get a different error

    arnavisca@arnavisca-System-Product-Name:~$ powspec
    powspec: error while loading shared libraries: libgfortran.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

    I think I have to delete early installs. "shared libraries" makes me think like that.

    You need to install libgfortran

    sudo apt-get install libgfortran3

    Re: Error: "cannot execute binary file"

    It's already installed. The problem is due to conflict between same programs (32 and 64 bit that I installed) that uses the same library. (This is my thought, I'm not experienced on ubuntu by the way.)
