WD Caviar Green Slow Boot Problems

I'm having pretty aggravating problems with my WD15EARS and WD20EARS sata hard disks running with my Gigabyte 880GA-UD3H motherboard (http://www.gigabyte.us/products/prod....aspx?pid=3758). I'm booting off of a smaller seagate sata drive and I manage to start up in about 45 seconds from grub to login (also odd since I'm running a 6-core 3.2ghz processor). When I connect either of the WD Caviar Green drives the boot time shoots up to about 3 and a half minutes, which is clearly unacceptable. Additionally, all methods of installing any version of ubuntu onto the drive fails because it appears that it would take more than a day to finish. I've lost my most dmesg log, but I'll try to grab a new one and post it soon.

Once the drives get booted properly I can manage to read and write to single files with approximately expected speeds, but booting, mounting, and running LS on a drive lag beyond all expectations. I've checked the drive with WD align and attempted to format it several times with partitions starting on the 2048, 64, and 63 sectors with no performance increase using NTFS or EXT3/4. My Windows Dual-boot boots up a bit slower with the drives, but nothing close to 3.5 minutes.

Is this drive incompatible with recent Ubuntu distributions (I'm trying 11.10 and 12.04)? Does the motherboard have known issues with SATA III? Has anyone had any luck getting help from WD on this type of issue (I bought the drives on EBay, so there's probably no warranty)? Any information you can provide would be much appreciated.

The closest thing I've found on the forums to this issue is linked below, but although the hardware is similar they seem to be experiencing different symptoms. They're also using Caviar Green and a gigabyte board, but can't seem to even have the drive appear in the BIOS.

Re: WD Caviar Green Slow Boot Problems

I have a couple of these green WD drives too. You definitely want partitions aligned on the 2048 byte boundary. I found that starting with Ubuntu 11.04 Gparted automatically recognizes them as advanced format drives and will align the partitions for you. You can verify that with fdisk - sounds like you already know how to do that, but if not, try

    sudo fdisk -lu /dev/sda

if /dev/sda is your drive. If it starts at 63, you need to align the partition - really recommend 2048 as Gparted will automatically do with the newer OSes.

My drives do not have any performance issues in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (though I created the partitions with an 11.04 installation). Boot isn't slow, mounting isn't slow, performance is a bit slow compared to "regular" drives, but these are for data storage and are low power/5900RPM drives, so I don't expect them to be fast.

NTFS will be slower than ext3/4 because the fuse driver in Ubuntu seems to eat CPU especially operating on large files.

For fun, have you checked S.M.A.R.T. on these drives to confirm that there is nothing wrong with them? Did you consider looking at how the BIOS of your motherboard is configured for SATA?

Oh, and I wouldn't recommend trying to install an OS on a Green drive myself - you can but even if you fix whatever performance conflict you now seem to have, at 5900 RPM you're not going to get good performance.

Re: WD Caviar Green Slow Boot Problems

Thanks for the response Ahallu, I'm glad to hear someone has gotten these drives to work. I'll definitely have to take that recommendation on not installing it as an OS drive into consideration, but with my current wimpy power supply I might still resort to it due to limited SATA plugs. I believe it would be noticable, but I'm more concerned about redundancy at the moment, which is why I'm attempting to install both caviar drives (the 1.5TB drive actually came out of an external).

My 3.5 minute time came from the 1.5TB that I believe is formatted to initial sector 63, so I started up the 2TB formatted to 2048s, and came up with 2.75, so there might be some improvement, but in my mind it's probably read-speed based which would support the theory that there's a deeper underlying issue here.

Back to the matter at hand, I've been up and down the BIOS screen looking for SATA options to tweak, but haven't really come up with much. For good measure I also tried resetting the BIOS settings to factory default and "failsafe" modes to no avail. Here's the fdisk you asked for. Is the sector size supposed to be reported as 512-bytes? That's one place that had concerned me earlier, but I haven't found any example fdisk's that actually show the 4096, probably because of the Windows XP compatability "virtual sectors" or whatever.

    Code:
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 243201 cylinders, total 3907029168 sectors
    Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

And a dmesg for good measure. It gets interesting around the 2 minute mark where some errors crop up. Can't believe I haven't noticed those before, I guess I was looking before the gap in time rather than after it? Or maybe I was using the other drive last time? In any case, I'll spend some time trying to decode that, and maybe see if it happens on the other drive. Ubuntu's disk utility claims that I have 1379 bad sectors, which seems a bit high to me, but I've owned this drive for over a year now and the drive is reporting 277.4 powered on days... so maybe it's natural, I'm not familliar enough with hard disks (especially ones this size) to really have a good idea of when to worry. Should I try to find a copy of spinrite?

Reallocated sectors are in red with a warning at 95
So pending sectors are in red with a warning at 1284
Spinup time is only 5.6 seconds.

Also interesting: It looks like the Oneric kernel doesn't support large blocks. Maybe I just need to update the kernel?

I'm attempting to update to 3.4 at the moment.

Well, you can stop right there. 1284 pending sectors is catastrophic. The drive surface is probably failing. Get any data you care about off the drive ASAP if you still can. Then, if the drive is an internal drive, try to RMA it under warranty; if it's the one you pulled out of an external case, I guess you are probably out of luck with the warranty.

You could try zeroing out the drive (I like DBAN - www.dban.org ) but you've got 95 reallocated sectors already and that's bad too (not catastrophic yet - it means 95 bad sectors were already replaced but eventually you'll run out of spares to replace them with).

You mention a "wimpy" power supply. I foolishly had a crap power supply in this same Ubuntu server that has my green drives in it, and when this power supply finally started failing a few months ago, it corrupted one of the green drives. I probably could have kept it and would have been fine after writing zeros (all pending sectors went away) but it was under warranty so I just RMA'ed it for a new drive. I now look for good quality power supplies on sale - often can be had for under $30 USD after rebate - and won't be using any more junky power supplies in computers I care about.

Re: WD Caviar Green Slow Boot Problems

On second thought, what are the RAW values for pending sector count and reallocated sector count? Maybe you didn't read those off. Those are what matter. If you really only have a few pending sectors it might not be that bad, but you need to clear them if you want to use the drive effectively, by zeroing the drive (hope they either go away or get reallocated). If you can't get rid of all the pending sectors, you need to replace the drive.

Hmm, glad I've found someone so familiar with HDD stats

Ubuntu claims 197 normalized, 196 worst, threshold: 0, value: 1284. I'm not sure which of those would be raw.

At the top, it claims 1379 bad sectors, I remember knowing the difference between raw and reported at some point, but can't for the life of me recall it now. Do these numbers help you discern, or should I use a program you might be more familiar with?

OK, I think that last column ("value") is "RAW" so if it's 1284, then that's really bad - so yeah, I think you're done. Backup any data you cared about if you can, try DBANing the drive to clear the bad sectors...but I would expect you probably won't have any luck with so many failed sectors. If the drive isn't under warranty, you now have a paperweight. Bummer.

Re: WD Caviar Green Slow Boot Problems

Bah, I was holding out hope that it would be something fixable because of the the fact that two drives were exhibiting the same behavior. Maybe that means I have two paper weights Damn Ubunutu's liberal use of soothing green hues! One of them doesn't really matter, and it's in the process of zero-ing now (another 5 hours or so to go). I'll have to get on ordering a new drive I guess.

Thanks for your help, I never would have caught the few red marks within the sea of green in Ubuntu's disk utility.
