    Re: No sound

    Hi! I tried:

    options snd-hda-intel model=asus position_fix=0
    options snd-hda-intel model=asus position_fix=1
    options snd-hda-intel model=asus position_fix=2
    options snd-hda-intel model=m4a785td-v position_fix=0
    options snd-hda-intel model=m4a785td-v position_fix=1
    options snd-hda-intel model=m4a785td-v position_fix=2

None of them worked, and for value 2 in position fix for both m4a..td and asus got worse, so I just set it back to 0. currently: "options snd-hda-intel model=m4a785td-v position_fix=0"

I'm getting a little afraid, why so hard to fix? :O

Its fixable..and i have been chasing the wrong number,i was looking for
the model number you gave me. but..i found you have the x5dab 1708
chipset. try one more time with the model = and fix=
this time say model = auto and fix =1
if that doesnt work..let me know and i will send you the only link
i have for a different possible fix. thanks

    Re: No sound

incase you are curious how i came up with the different model number,
you actually gave it to me and i overlooked it. while your mother board
is the M4a785 the built on sound card also has its own number.
If you look at ...alsamixer...the 1708 number is upper left..chipset vt1708s
and i asked you to show the results of command ....

    cat /proc/asound/card0/codec* | grep Codec
it also came back vt1708s...that is here on this thread.
then i went to the link i posted earlier and it shows the Asus chipset as 1708s
model number X5DAB. and of no direct command line fix...just another link
to fixes for that sound card...but no "headphone" not working example.
you might also try this link from ubuntu Asus forum.

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1685073
    thanks.

it is for headphones not working..and has a possible fix.

    Re: No sound

I tried model=auto with fix 0,1,2 and the result is still the same, I also found this: http://yamz.wordpress.com/2010/06/11...el-audio-jack/, and it is also the same.
Still no solution for my problem. But thanks for your help.

    Re: No sound

Glad to see you havent lost hope. I just spent 3 days unwinding a mess from
a 12.4 load,so i can relate to the frustration. I found a post with the exact
chip 1708 and same problems you are having..and the trys with the fix= routine.
he spent 3 weeks and finally found the fix at.

take a read and see what you think.

    Re: No sound

Or I should simply upgrade to 12.04 LTS, IF there's a solution to fix this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1976859 . There the sound works perfect, however I cannot watch 3D movies unlike in 11.10 (which I'm currently using). looks like there's always a problem to face.

    Re: No sound

one question i havent asked is...did the headphones ever work using 11.10?

also i spent some considerable time looking for any kind of answer for your VT1708s
chip. Seems there are alot of different PC's out there, different models, manufactures
and types that have the same issue.

This is a file in the alsa documents that lists massive amount of info on drivers and
what should be the correct input for model= and fix= values. Getting those correct
should fix your problem. I ran this file and couldnt find VT1708, but was able to get
data with Asus. My Alsa mixer version is differnt than yours so perhaps you will get
what you need with VT1708 search on this file.

    code:

    touch 1708

    zless /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/ALSA-Configuration.txt.gz > 1708

    grep -iA5 asus 1708
    ---------------------------------
or grep VT, your computer model,1708,x5dab ANYTHING that relates to your sound
    card.
I also read some blurb about a switch for the headphone...i dont know if it was
a physical hardware or software switch, the poster wasnt clear. You also might try
loading the 12.4 in "try without really loading" and see what the settings are in the
alsa config file. Hope this helps.

    Re: No sound

also would you please look at this other Alsa documents file and see if there
is anything at all that relates to your computer..model name of computer,
description of sound output locations..anything. thanks
    terminal command. ctrl/alt/t

    code:

    zless /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/HD-Audio-Models.txt

note: to navigate the file..arrow down for next line
and then q to quit...followed by exit. for both document txt files.
