Workspace switcher in 12.04: why must we go backwards?

Am I the only one who finds switching workspaces more tedious than ever? I really miss the switcher in 9.04, where all you had to do was roll the mouse wheel over empty desktop to switch between spaces.

In 12.04, you have to hassle the launcher out of its hidey hole on the left (I can't find any way to put the launcher anywhere else), click on the workspace switcher icon, then right click on the desired workspace. Whew.

A pointer to any alternatives to this (Compiz, maybe?) would be appreciated.

You can use keyboard shortcuts. Hold Ctrl+Alt and press the arrow keys to switch workspaces.

Interesting, I have the opposite problem in Ubuntu Studio 12.04. The checkbox to turn off workspace switching via the mouse wheel doesn't work. It's just on all the time. Hrmmm... there must be a setting deeper in the system that controls that more effectively.
