    What exactly is a laptop "for developers"?

    I keep reading the article on Dell's proposed Ubuntu Laptop, but I can't get a fix on what constitutes a laptop "for developers"? Just wondering...

    A proper "laptop for developers" should be able to emulate different clock speeds and hardware profiles at will.

    Also, depends on what you're developing.

    (No, I don't have an actual answer.)
    Acer Aspire 5050-5554 w/ 4GB RAM upgrade. Ubuntu Aug 07 - Dec 08; Arch Linux Dec 08 - July 2011; Ubuntu again since July 2011.
    "Triclops": Home-built AMD Athlon II X2 250, 4GB RAM, Radeon 6570, 500GB HDD. Ubuntu/Windows-XP duo since Jun 2010.

    Sputnik is mostly targetted towards devops people: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DevOps

    So it comes with a bunch of cloud tools and juju, and they're working on things like profiles on github so you can say "I want ruby stuff" and it'll go snag profiles, etc.

    I see. So... it's not the hardware specs, but the software that makes it targeted toward devs? So is DELL going to make a sort of Ubuntu Distro (in combination with Canonical), similar to Ubuntu Studio, except for devs?

    It's partially hardware, so it comes with 4gb of RAM and an SSD already. Thin and light.

    It's not a different distro, it's currently 12.04 with a few hardware enablement patches that aren't in 12.04 yet (but should be in the distro in the next few weeks).

    for more info on what extra packages they've added to their build.

    It's cool, but I don't think I can come to terms with an OEM install that doesn't ship with proper drivers for the trackpad. I mean, as a fan, I have to find any OEM install a little heartening. As a consumer, though, I expect that the benefit of an OEM install is having some promise that the product actually works.

    Interesting. Thanks for the link. Where did you find the hardware specs?

    Looking forward to these laptops. Definitely would consider getting one.

    So... out of curiosity... is that because you're a developer or because you like Dells with Ubuntu preinstalled?
