Yes, Dennis' suggestion helped me get all aspects, pointer, insertion bar, hourglass in order. Even though every thing worked fine Unity 2D/3D, the Xfce session needed a fix with respect to the cursor/pointer.

Just one comment: Dennis mentioned using Advanced Settings (gnome-tweak-tool) to complete the Gnome side of things. I have it installed but couldn't find it easily in 4.10. I ended up running
