Exclamation No digital passthrough with VLC 2.01 on 12.04

I can't seem to get VLC to do digital pass-through with VLC 2.01. I used to do this under 11.10 without issue.

I can't just copy the VLC config from 11.10 forward since many of the audio options seems to have changed with the new OS and new VLC.

I can get SMPlayer to do the passthrough with ubuntu 12.04 so I have some confidence that my basic setup is OK.

I have tried ALSA and PulseAudio output and tried every device in VLC for ALSA output yet the best I get is stereo.

Of course I am outputting via optical S/PDIF in all cases.

Can anyone confirm digital pass-through working with VLC under Ubuntu 12.04?

Anyone have any idea why VLC can't do pass-through but smplayer can?

Dolby Digital via SPDIF works for me in VLC under Ubuntu 12.04 but often loses sound and does not recover without restarting the player :/
