When I tried to install bcm driver under ubuntu 6.6, it worked for few minutes ok, browsed some web pages. But stopped working after rebooting.

Then I clean installed ubuntu 7 , reading it has better networking. Alas 7 did not even recognise the bcm, Worse than v.6

Now bcm developed some hardware problem and wont even work under xp. xp dev mgr says device cannot start, code 10. The posted ubuntu 6 driver for bcm must have damaged it.

I bought new pcmcia motorolla g w/l card. it works fine under xp. but not even recognised by ubuntu 7.

Ubuntu 7 has very poor networking despite of its claims.
its seems a joke when i see "Ubuntu is for humans!"
I am a tech myself for 10 yrs, and I spent about 2 months learning ubuntu, All I can say, Ubuntu is for aliens, not for humans.

I am really dispappointed with ubuntu.
This is the 1450th post in this thread. I've never heard of anyone breaking their card using this, so I seriously doubt that Ubuntu is to blame. I suspect your card died, and this is just a coincidence.

Just remember how long you've been using Windows vs. Ubuntu...

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

I'm a new Linux user, and have chosen xubuntu as my first distro (7.04 release). I'm attempting to set up wireless on an Asus A6K laptop, and so far have had no luck.

I initially went through the guide in the first post after fiddling around prior to that. It didn't help. I then moved on to The Raven's post, but that seemed to make the card disappear from recognition - the "network unclaimed" message started occurring when I used 'lshw', and I could not complete step 9 of Raven's post, because the connection disappeared from the manager.

At that stage I decided a clean install and a reattempt of the first post instructions was in order. Unfortunately, a bug which stopped the xubuntu installer from formatting properly slowed me down, but I fixed that.

So now I have tried all the steps in the first post, and it still does not work. I wanted to get some input before attempting The Raven's process again, so I have included the log file from the first post process below. Any advice would be appreciated.

Running Feisty on an HP Pavilion ze2000 (specifically ze2315us). Relevant info below.

    bcmwl5 : driver installed
device (14E4:4318) present (alternate driver: bcm43xx)

I've blacklisted bcm43xx in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist (and I've tried it with ndiswrapper blacklisted. No change)

    I'm using network-manager

    /etc/modules looks like this
    fuse
    lp
    ndiswrapper
Network interfaces currently looks like this
    auto lo
    iface lo inet loopback

    auto eth1
    iface eth1 inet dhcp

    auto eth2
    iface eth2 inet dhcp

    auto ath0
    iface ath0 inet dhcp

    auto wlan0
    iface wlan0 inet dhcp
I've tried it with everything commented out but lo with no effect.

NEVER MIND! Fixed it. Reinstalled Feisty and used sudo apt-get install bcm43xx-fwcutter. And that was it. I'm going to restart just to make sure, but it seems that after 2 days of mucking around, a fresh start and a simple command got it working.

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

After trying many things to get my wifi working for my Broadcom card (including fresh installs and running through this HOWTO many times), I finally decided to look at the log file generated by the script installation (RTFM!).

In it I noticed this error:

    Code:
    Reading package lists...
    Building dependency tree...
    Reading state information...
    E: Couldn't find package ndiswrapper-common
apt-get died with exit status 100
So after another fresh install (probably not necessary but just in case), I installed ndiswrapper-common and ndiswrapper-utils-1.9 using Synaptic Package Manager. That installed fine. Then I ran through this HOWTO once more and by step 7 my wifi was working like a charm!!

    UPDATE:
After a reboot the wifi was no longer connecting. Will try some other stuff and update when successful. I'm using an Acer 3004WLMi - damned thing!

Thank you for posting this fix. It has saved my sanity. Thanks still go to Compwiz18 for brilliant work with the initial driver that had initially saved my sanity when I started working with this laptop. Your thread is the only reason that Ubuntu (linux in general) has continued to exist on this system. Thank you all, who may have contributed.
I would like to say that I refuse to be branded. However, if Ubuntu is doing the branding, I have no choice but to feel honored.

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

I have Dell Inspiron 6400 and a good will to install Ubuntu Festy Fawn. But, unfortunately I cann't install (not even boot it with live CD). I always get the same error:

    Code:
Microcode "bcm43xx_microcode5.fw" not available or load failed
I see that this thread has more than 1000 posts and I really don't have strenght to read them all.
    Can someone help me ??
