Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

Ohhh... that's right. No internet could be a slight problem, but not to worry.

Put the CD you installed Ubuntu with into the computer.
    Open the package manager.
Find the entries starting with ndiswrapper
Select the ones that have the Ubuntu logo in front of them (if you aren't sure what the Ubuntu logo is, it is in the top left corner of this page)
    Mark them for installation
    Click apply
    Rerun the script

Of course, if you have any trouble, feel free to ask.

Perfect. Just make sure you insert the CD _after_ booting into Ubuntu. As for the Package Manager, in administrator.

I still got the same thing...

Does it matter which version of Ubuntu I'm running?

Red face Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

Looks like I spoke too soon.

This method (and the associated ones) worked to get my wireless working.

    ONCE.

When I disconnect, it won't start again until I reverse all the installation steps and then re-apply all the steps. (i.e. uninstall the Ntwork Manager, etc.)

Needless to say that's not going to work as a long-term solution.

So now the question remains ... how can the Broadcom 4318 Wireless be installed in Ubuntu so that it works when needed? Is this a problem with with wireless in Ubuntu in general ? Or is it just Broadcom in the Acer TravelMate 2480?

Thanks in advance for any information!

    Tim

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

Why is it so hard for the Ubuntu team to get this stuff working? Are they not allowed to work with wireless cards because it's illegal like mp3s?

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

I think it's more likely that the vendors want to concentrate on the Windows drivers and don't give a lot of care to the Linux or Mac market. Half the battle is prying info from the vendors.

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

Yeah, it has partly to do with the "free" software policy...the drivers used in this process are the Windows version, so they aren't free and open source, which is Ubuntu's criteria. Work on an open source driver is in progress, and it works now with mixed results. Also, Broadcom drivers are completely closed source, so the open source version has to be reverse engineered.

@tjod: That's weird, although not totally uncommon. Mine works every time I turn the computer on, apparently your's doesn't. When you turn the computer on, try running sudo rmmod bcm43xx and sudo rmmod ndiswrapper and sudo modprobe ndiswrapper in that order.

@steveyos666: The version of Ubuntu shouldn't matter... You are downloading the file in Windows, right?
