from an answer to my question on launchpad.

The answer boils down to this seems to have been a problem since 11.10, although in 11.10 I had no trouble shutting down or restarting.

One person wrote that he found a solution by adding the following line to the file /etc/default/halt:

    Code:

    INIT_HALT = POWEROFF
I added this and so far I am able to shutdown without problem. So I think this is solved, but I'll wait a bit before marking it solved just to be sure.
Thank you.. I well try that out and return to tell What happen

    Re: 12.04 shutdown freezes

Unfortunately after a couple of clean shutdowns it hung again.
I found another thread that suggested I downgrade my video driver.
I found the driver but am not sure how to go about installing it. I got an error that said I can't install the driver with the X server running.

    UPDATE

I looked up how to install the Nvidia driver that I had read was a solution for some people.
    I installed it.
It totally killed my x server.
I was stuck at a command line version of Ubuntu - while I use the terminal a lot, a totally graphic free computer is not my idea of fun!

So I did a clean install and am now back at square one.

    Re: 12.04 shutdown freezes

I have the same problem with a fresh install of 12.04. It randomly freezes after I shutdown. I get the purple screen with Ubuntu and it freezes.

I also have a laptop that is freezing when it suspends.

For a major release of Ubuntu, there are sure a lot of glitches and bugs. I guess thats why its free.

Ready to wipe it and re-install Windows 7.

On my Inspirion 1520 I have noticed problems with:

    1. Conky in 12.04 has a bug that messed up my conkies - solution is to downgrade Conky.
    2. The shortcut for the spell check in Gedit (Shift+F7) no longer works.
3.The computer hangs when I shutdown or restart.
    4. The wireless problem that were in previous versions of Ubuntu is still here in 12.04 - the driver that comes with Ubuntu doesn't work and my card is not seen. The solution is to uninstall the wifi stuff that ships with Ubuntu and install a different driver.

    Re: 12.04 shutdown freezes

On my computer, if I restart, it doesn't completely shut down as in the OP. But if I hit shutdown, it does. Logging out first makes both work though. When I want to restart, I just shutdown and hit the power button to restart. Not a deal breaker by any means for an otherwise perfectly working system.

    Re: 12.04 shutdown freezes

I also have the same problem. As said by 'Libbard' (above)

"It's freeze when screen with ubuntu and the dot's under it loading and just like that for hours!!"

I think there is a software problem (bug) and I think 'livewire' is less than charitable in observing:

'For a major release of Ubuntu, there are sure a lot of glitches and bugs. I guess thats why its free'.

If you do not believe in the philosophy of open source software, you will never be satisfied with it.
I do hope the software problem will be fixed soon.

    Re: 12.04 shutdown freezes

I'm seeing the same behavior on a Dell Inspiron 1720.

Fresh install of 12.04, running the post-release updates version of the NVidia drivers.

As with others on this thread, if I logout prior to shutdown / restart, everything works as expected.

It's only if I pick shutdown / restart while logged in, that the problem occurs.

    I've also tried:
    http://askubuntu.com/questions/12584...r-off-computer

    and the

    INIT_HALT = POWEROFF

approach, but neither seem to work. Offering it up here, as one (or both) seemed to solve the problem for some folks.

I'm reaching here - is it possible that this is something to do with Unity (since Unity doesn't come into play when you're logged out)?

    Re: 12.04 shutdown freezes

It seems to be something to do with the proprietary nvidia drivers.

The ones that come stock with Ubuntu seem to not cause the problem.
