12.04 a wireless connects but no Internet

    Hello,

I upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04 last night and now my wireless doesn't work. I'm on an institutional connection with enterprise WEP and TTLS and PAP authentication. I can connect to the network and everything looks good, but I can't actually get the Internet to work. The exact same settings worked under 11.10. Wireless card is an atheros AR9285 that I've never had any problems with before. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I love Ubuntu, but it's very frustrating that something breaks after every upgrade...

Re: 12.04 a wireless connects but no Internet

First things first, tell your system administrator to switch to more modern wireless security.

OK. Now that that's settled, why don't we have a look at your IP address and connection statistics. Let's start with some commands that will give me and other forum members more information about the interface, and your connection.

run the following commands in the terminal and paste the results. Be sure to put the respective results in their own code brackets (It's the # button in the formatting toolbar)
    Code:
    iwconfig
    Code:
    ifconfig
    Code:
    nm-tool
    Code:
    sudo lshw -C network
    (this one'll take awhile)

I agree, they need to upgrade. Maybe you'll be better at convincing them than I have?

Anyhow, thanks for taking the time to help.

Do you have a cable connection as well? I find that I needed to pull out my ethernet cable if the wifi is active. As soon as I do internet works again.

Re: 12.04 a wireless connects but no Internet

I don't have a an ethernet cable plugged in, and unfortunately don't even have a hardwire connection available. I tried deleting the wired connection shown under "Network Connections", but that didn't seem to help. I also deleted and re-created the wireless connection, but it's still the same thing. It connects normally like it did before the upgrade, but unable to ping anything. Interestingly, I just tried entering an incorrect password, and it still goes through and says I'm connected, so I don't know what's up with that. I know this is a weird connection to troubleshoot and that our system is outdated, but I don't really have the option to update the wireless here, and it's frustrating that it worked perfectly well before the 11.10 -> 12.04 upgrade.

Here's some more log data after deleting the wired connection and remaking the wireless connection:
    sudo cat /var/log/syslog | grep etwork | tail -n40

Re: 12.04 a wireless connects but no Internet

OH MY GOD WHAT A STUPID PROBLEM!

I had always had Mobloquer running, and somehow during the upgrade the list got updated to include my school. Turned mobloquer off, it works like a charm...

Thanks again for all of your help, I really appreciate it.

Re: 12.04 a wireless connects but no Internet

I am in a possibly similar, and unresolved situation. My university uses WPA2 Enterprise with TTLS/PAP. The connection works fine in Ubuntu 10.04 and 11.10. In 12.04, though, network manager just keeps prompting for my password. (The connection never completes.) I have an Atheros AR9287. Open networks and regular WPA networks work fine. I'm going to try connecting with a USB wifi dongle later today to see if it's something with ath9k.
