You shuldent have an issue, they specify it as "desktop" bacuse they used to have the netbook version wich had unity but they merged them togeather into one... As far as drivers are concerned, I'd try a live boot and see how you like it and if there are any issues that arise.

um as far as installation instructions, this is pretty decent instructions here:
    http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/...ubuntu-desktop
as for office programs, ubuntu has a suite called libreoffice preinstalled on it, it has word, spreadsheets, etc, so if you end up installing it, you will already have the office programs

It is the difference between desktop and server editions. A server does not need a desktop. So, the server edition does not install a desktop User Interface.

So, it is not so much Desktop PC against Laptop or Notebook.

Computer hardware has made so much progress over the years that even a notebook machine is as powerful as a Desktop machine was just a few years ago.

    Did you follow these steps?

    http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/...ick-on-windows

If so, then you follow these steps:

    http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/...ubuntu-desktop

    Regards.

Bear in mind that if by "Office" you mean "Microsoft Office", MS Office will neither install nor run on Linux without using a utility/app called Wine, which provides a compatibility layer. In general, Windows applications do not run natively in Linux.

Wine does not run all MS applications equally well. In fact, there are some that will not run at all. http://www.winehq.org/ has a database of what has been found to work to various degrees.

I only use word on ubuntu... You use a program called PlayonLinux
You can find that in the software center
