same volume no matter where i set level, including mute

Hi, i'm not sure if this is an ubuntu issue or system76 issue, so i figured i should post it here. Sorry if it's been asked before, I searched and found a bunch of threads that seemed broadly similar to this, but couldn't actually find one addressing this particular issue (if it already exists my apologies)

I am getting sound at a fixed level, no matter where I slide my volume. Even if I mute, the fixed level still persists. The interface responds to my choices (tells me the volume is muted or high, medium, etc), but the actual sound I'm hearing is not affected.

I've tried rebooting several times, I've tried with and without headphones, no use.

I've tried multiple internet browsers, as well as offline music players like Clementine, all the same issue.

    Any guess?

Which version of Ubuntu are you using? Have you modified any settings in Alsamixer? If not, then there could be another issue, but I want to check this first just in case.
