empathy CONTINUALLY losing connection on LAN

Is empathy-chat version 3.2.0.1 in Ubuntu 11.10 NOT compatible with empathy-chat version 2.34.0 in Ubuntu 11.04?

The reason I ask is because if we try to chat over the local LAN through empathy-chat's "People nearby" account, it constantly says the person on the other end has gone offline at a frequency of approximately every second message sent.

It's really annoying.

We have different versions of Ubuntu running on different machines because of personal preference of the users and certain versions of Ubuntu seem to run better on certain hardware, so installing the same version of Ubuntu of every computer is not an option.

Should the two empathy-chat versions be compatible or are we out of luck?

Is there no solution to this at all?

How can something seemingly so simple be so difficult to find a solution for?

All I want is to be able to send messages across a LAN using a LAN chat client which will work in BOTH Ubuntu 11.10 Unity AND Ubuntu 10.10 with Gnome... surely this can be done?
