Without installing or downloading anything the free space on my file system is dropping by about 100 megs/minute. Not long ago I freed up 7GB after free space ran out last night and already its back down to 2.7GB.

check your logs and running processes

Odd thing I walked away from my computer and the free space is now reading 7.9gb.
anyways you can use the below command to check disk usage of current folder
Code:du -sh
If you have a GUI, the "Disk Usage Analyzer" tool is really good for hunting down large files or folders. It's included by default and can be found in the "Accessories" sub-menu. On older versions of Ubuntu it is in the "System" menu.
I decided to do a fresh install as I was looking at 12.04 beta and was having other problems.
