I use Clipit1.4.1 in Lubuntu 11.10

I think it may have caused my system to freeze (all except the mouse cursor).

Anyway what I want to do is also access all of the clipit history file in a plain text file (I don't mind if there's some gobbledigook).

I'm using this as a workaround for the old Spike function.

In the terminal when I do
cat ~/.local/share/clipit/history
I can see lots of plain text. All good.

But when I do
~/.local/share/clipit/history >t
leafpad t

I just get a line of yyyyyyyyyyyyyy's.

if I do
nano t
it gives a better result, but fiddling with nano is a pain.

Any ideas welcome.
