Thunderbird upgrade - use ppa or wait?

    I'm using Lucid 10.04 and Thunderbird 3.1.20

I've been getting warnings about Mozilla stopping support for Thunderbird 3.1 for ages now - so should I upgrade by adding the the Mozilla PPA to my software sources, or is it likely that a newer version will eventually appear in the Ubuntu repositories, as happened with Firefox a few months ago?

Exact same question here. My Mom is running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Thunderbird. I've been telling her for months it should update automatically on her LTS release, but now that April is here I'm beginning to doubt it. Should I bump her to the ppa version?

I would try the stable PPA , I did read a post by a 10.04 user stating the latest Thunderbird was in the 10.04 repository but I don't know for sure. I had an update for TBird 11.0.1 yesterday on 11.10 . I remember reading that TBird and Firefox would update automatically on 11.04 and 11.10 but don't remember if 10.04 was included.

If the latest TBird releases are in the 10.04 repository they should have come via the update manager . If you are 3.x clearly none of the versions in between 3.6 and 11 have been put in the 10.04 repository if you have run regular updates .

I'm curious about this too since I'm at my Inlaw's and they are asking about the upgrade? Since they are on Pop 3 will their emails still be there after the upgrade or do I need to back it all up for them?

The link to click actually says something like "Does this affect you?"
After I "voted", it changed to "This bug affects you and 2 other people". Note that you have to be logged in to launchpad.net to do this.

Well, I've been wondering the same thing and so dropped by here to find out what's going on. The version in the repository is the same as the one I have installed (3.1.20)

The bug report shows the status as being "in progress". If you are wanting to go ahead and add the PPA to get the latest version, then follow the directions here, http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...41&postcount=5
