    Drive sound when booting

    Hello,

I hear strange sounds when loading Ubuntu from the CD. Will it destroy my disc drive? Is it normal?

    Define strange.

As above - clicking and whirring is normal as the info as read from the disc.

If it talks to you or makes noises like a demon - then you have problems.

    Definition of “strange”:
    It whistles.

Well some drives do make a lot of noise. I get quite a bit of air movement noise on my older drive although it has never whistled.

Does it do it with all CD/DVD or just this one?

Did you burn the Ubuntu image onto a lower quality disc? Sometimes cheaper discs arent all that straight so could cause excessive noise.

    Cheers

No, I burned it to a normal disc. The disc was straight.

As it is normal when using other cds I would suggest the problem is with the particular disc - but it isnt an issue peculiar to linux/ubuntu installation discs. Although a blank disc may appear to be fine to the eye there doesnt need to be a big defect to cause odd noises when spinning at that speed.

My advice would be to burn another disc if you are concerned.
