Question How to switch video driver?

I have googled (a lot) on this, but I'm stumped by too many hits!!

I have the dreaded intel 855 card on my old laptop, which I'm currently running with Ubuntu 11.04 (Unity and 855 ain't gonna' work!).

It's running "ok", in that my system stays up, and low res video works OK (e.g. youtube, iplayer).

But in every drawing package I've tried (inkscape, libredraw, xara, dia, gimp). the cursor becomes INVISIBLE when it's not moving, which makes drawing near to impossible.

I am aware the 855 bugs will not be fixed for me.

Question: how do I (reversibly) switch driver to fbdev or VESA to confirm that the disappearing cursor is indeed yet another 855 bug?

Re: How to switch video driver?

Is this a fujitsu laptop? Asking because I have one and, from what I recall, fbdev is the driver for the buttons on the keyboard or bezel (e.g., Fujitsu Button Device), not for the video.
Ubuntu 17.04 Mate, Mint 18.1 Mate; MS Win 8.1, MS Win10 Pro.
Will not respond to PM requests for support -- use the forums.
