Freezing and Temperature Monitoring on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric

My new (three-week-old) laptop is periodically, seemingly randomly freezing while running Ubuntu 11.10. I guess I have two questions relating to trying to diagnose and fix this.

    1. Since it just freezes and forces me to do a hard reset, I don't get any kind of error messages to tell me what is going on. Is there a log file somewhere I should be aware of that might contain clues about what has happened in a freeze?

    2. I suspect the freezing might be temperature-related, as it was when my desktop was freezing. I have managed to get an applet to detect my temperature; however, I want this information to be displayed in the taskbar so I can see what it is in the event of a freeze. I got this program to monitor my temperature, however it only displays an icon and I can't figure out why it isn't displaying useful information. How can I get it to do this?
