how to get jitsi to work?

I downloaded the correct .deb from the website, installed it, installed the dependencies.

When I start jitsi, it gives me a login screen with a partial yahoo username and then asks for a password. I give it the correct password, click ok, and it tells me no. If I click cancel instead, the login screen disappears. The Jitsi application sits on the launcher, if I click it nothing happens.

The jitsi bug-reporting system appears to be pretty obscure and for developers only, no launchpad, no bugzilla.

I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 with Gnome Shell.

So I'm left with you guys. Any suggestions?

Are you using the 1.0 "stable" version or the 1.1 "nightly" version? I would like to get Jitsi running on my machine but it keeps giving me errors when I try to connect through my Google account. I have a gmail account, but I'm not sure if that's the same thing as Google Talk.
