You say you're running Ubuntu 10.04 and you have replaced the motherboard, presumably with a new one?
Well, that sounds like the problem. Ubuntu 10.04 only knows hardware from early 2010 and previous years. If the motherboard is new, the GPU is probably new too.
You could either install a newer version of Ubuntu such as the latest 11.10, or go to the AMD website and download the latest ATI graphics driver for Linux. Note that it's not the easiest thing to install, and you have to install it every time you get a kernel update; you might be better off just installing 11.10 and use its automatic driver installer.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.
