Autohide top taskbars. How??

Hi
I noticed on some linux releases, they have a top taskbar instead of / as well as a bottom one.The bottom one can usually be auto hid.
But how to auto hide the top one?
It really bugs me, As some of these OS's look interesting, but I cant stand locked taskbars.
Specially as I'm on a net book, I need all the real estate I can get.
Is there a universal method to get these taskbars unlocked & autohid?

Reading that I have no idea which linux or desktop & panel you are using. I don't think there is a universal method as it depends pretty much on what you are using but I would say most can be hidden.

I know that 10.04 was mentioned but what version and window manager are you using? If you are using Gnome 2.whatever on Ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10 (classic Gnome) I do not believe that that bar disappears
