External monitor not recognized with HDMI, audio disabled

    Hi there,

A couple of days ago I decided to try using my new installation of Mint with a monitor connected by HDMI (have no VGA on the laptop). I know this is an Ubuntu forum, but Mint's Ubuntu-based and on the Mint forum I sadly got no answer.

Attaching the HDMI cable didn't seem to have any effect - settings didn't recognize that a second monitor was attached and no signal came through on the monitor. I tried redetecting my monitors, to no avail. That's problem #1.

Problem #2 is that ever since my audio doesn't work. When I boot the computer, no audio comes through, no matter what audio settings I have. Sometimes it helps to plug in headphones - after that the speakers work fine. Sometimes when I plug in the headphones the speakers don't work but the headphones do, and I can't adjust the volume. Sometimes nothing works at all. This really cramps my style. Anybody have an idea as to what I could do? Thanks a bunch!
