Have 11.10 on thumdrive need to save settings.

After some drama a while back I decided to tackle Ubuntu once more, this time running from a thumb drive. I have one important issue: whenever I shut down I need to re-install my apps and reset my settings. It is making it difficult to use on a regular basis. How do I fix this?

Also: I run with a laptop and an external 1920x1080 monitor. How do I make my external monitor my main, with the launcher bar on it?

Once I get this straightened out I will play around with it more have many more questions I'm sure.

You need to create a USB stick with "persistence." Look at the slider near the bottom of this usb-creator screenshot, you want to choose "stored in reserved extra space."
