    Any homebrewers out there? (Pics!)

Hey all! I'm new to Ubuntu but I've been homebrewing for about 5 years now. I started out with just liquid malt extract on the stove-top but now I'm brewing exactly as the professional brewers do... but obviously on a smaller scale and with jerry-rigged gear.

So who else out there brews the beer they drink?

And to those who don't, why not? It's so easy and ridiculous amounts of fun.

12 gallon Coleman cooler: this is my mash tun, or the vessel in which malted barley (and sometimes other grains) soaks in hot water to extract the delicious sugars

I even built a temperature control chamber out of an old chest freezer, some 1x6 poplar, and a device that controls when the freezer kicks on. I can keep my beer fermenting at a constant temperature for a clean tasting brew.

I ran into Kyle Rankin at SCaLE 10x, and it turns out he's quite the home brewer and gave me some tips that, in conjunction with the pics above, may inspire me to try it again.

If you missed Kyle's article in Linux Journal about his Linux-power refrigerator that he set up for home brewing, it's a good read:

What a disappointment! I thought this thread was about homebrewing a Linux distribution.

I tried the homebrew thing about 20 years ago when a flatmate was in to it, yum! Much better taste, more punch and nicer price than many of the commercially available beers.

Gave up on it due to a change of circumstances which at the time wasn't particularly pleasant (over-indulgence in the home brew didn't help!) but that ultimately led to me meeting Mrs Lisati.

Another home brewer here! I like the climate controlled fermenter. We just use the basement during the summer (a pretty constant 60 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer and winter).

Nothing beats a good home brew!

Ah, nice to see fellow beer lovers on here.

For anybody looking to start or get back into it, check outHomebrew Talk. An incredibly friendly and knowledgeable community and some really DIY engineering geniuses. That's where I got the idea for the freezer fermentation chamber.

I really like beer and before I moved on I made some experiences on homebrewing with some friends. I would really like to start it again here, as the apartment is mine so I can do what I want instead of expecting agreement from my family, but unfortunatelly I stopped drinking because of the medication I'm taking.

But soon I'll have no more of this poison, then I'll indulge in all sweet beer I can, and I'll homebrew all of it!

We used to make our own wine (legal in the UK). I have been thinking we could start again, it's so expensive to buy.

Ingredients for wine can be crazy expensive. However, I've found that I can make 5 gallons of delicious beer with tons of flavor for as little as 12 bucks. Don't get me wrong, I have my really expensive recipes (~$40) but it's all worth it. I love drinking my final product but I get more enjoyment out of the hobby when I'm actually brewing or giving beer away to those who appreciate it. I'd say I usually give away 1-2 gallons of each batch.

EDIT: But I am super jealous of you being in the UK. Don't get me wrong, the American craft beer explosion is insane and there is nearly an endless amount of choices, but you have easy access to tons of Real Ale varieties. There is a brewpub here and there that will serve special casked beers at room temperature but nothing like a nice, low-alcohol UK bitter than you can drink a whole session of (session = 8 pints.)
