Samsung external dvd

Hi all

I bought a samsung SE-208 external dvd player for my netbook, which I have on Ubuntu.

I can't get the dvd to work. It only claims to run on Windows and Mac, but then so do most things and they have always worked fine on Linux.

I've used my dual boot and it loads and works fine in Windows 7.

Can anyone advise how I might be able to get it running? When I plug it in, it's not visible at the minute and won't even open the drive, but it does flash a few times initially.
