    Getting my microphone to work

My microphone is not working with Skype. I do a test call and cannot hear my recorded message.
I tried doing some fiddling around with alsamixer, but I don't really know what I'm doing with that and there's a few settings that I don't know about, for example the "Mic1" and "Mic2" selector.
I have two sound cards, and the one I want to use, the Dell SoundBlaster Live, is currently default in phonon.
The mic is unmuted. Plugging the mic into either of my sound cards doesn't work. I tried looking up a few online solutions, but there are so very many and I'm not sure which one will work.
The audio devices in Skype are set to the "PulseAudio server".
Happy to accept any help I can get at this point!

kmix for some reason has the mic muted by default.

open kmix, go to the capture devices tab, click on the speaker icon and bring the slider to max....
