    1.67ghz
    2.00 GB DDR2
    120 GB HD

    any ideas?

I have the 15" 1.67 ghz with the same issue. The live cd doesn't work. I was able to install using the alternate install CD image. The installed 12.04 will hang at the same point as the live cd, but I "fixed" it by doing this:

For anyone else with a Powerbook5,8 (the last 15" ppc powerbook they made):

After installing, it hangs when it tries to load the wireless. So to get 12.04 up and running, I deleted the following directories on my installation (with a 10.04 live usb):

    /lib/modules/3.2.0-18-powerpc/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/b43

    /lib/modules/3.2.0-18-powerpc/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/b43legacy

I now have a working Kubuntu up (runs decently), though several other issues still remain (including getting the wireless up somehow), but at least the computer is functional (something to work with).
However, this seems to prevent the wireless from working again, even after trying to install the wireless again

Note: the directory 3.2.0-18-powerpc might be different now. I'm not on that computer at the moment, but on this Dell, the current appears to be 3.2.0-22

gwjvan, I don't have a problem with my airport extreme card. Are you sure that is the cause? Have you tried the simple things like removing the splash screen?

What about if you download the b43 firmware?

Have you raised a bug to get somebody to look at it?

I guess I can't be absolutely sure that is the problem (maybe removing it caused something else to subsequently not load, thus preventing it from hanging). However, removing those directories somehow fixed the boot issue.

Before this "fix", I was fairly convinced the wireless wasn't the problem, because I had gotten the same drivers to work on other versions of Ubuntu. However, it would hang after it said it was loading the wireless drivers.. so I removed them, and it booted.

I tried running the steps in the PPC faq to reinstall the wireless, but it didn't work. Now that I've upgraded to the latest beta, I'll try again.

I haven't raised a bug report. (I actually never have... I guess this would be a good place to start)

Edit: Upgrading to the most recent beta broke the system (it didn't fully upgrade, I think, so some files were missing). I'll have to do a fresh install and try the above again, filing a bug report for what happens.

Re: Testers needed for PowerPC 12.04

Hi it really seems to be a 12.04 problem to be!

I loaded the 10 Ubuntu and now i can start the installation.
But now it can not find any network device and scsi device!
I use the vscsi and virtual Network of IBMs PowerVM.

    Any Idea?
I try to load all modules i find, but still the same...

Re: Testers needed for PowerPC 12.04

Hello folks. I am new to Ubuntu. I work in a Apple only School District. Im starting to surplus all G4 equipment. Im installing the 12.04 on a hoard of about 25 machines. I have an issue with getting the modems to work on all G4 models, and the sound on the PowerBook G4'. They all very in cpu speed from 800 mhz to 1.67 ghz. Ram from 512 to 2 gigs, and hard drives of 20-180 gigs. I have a very nice PowerBook tester on my desk that I want for a machine at home but need the sound and modem to work. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. If I can get this to work, I have 120 machines I need to wipe and install something not tied to our district, thus Ubuntu has been the choice of an open source distro.

This wifi fix worked for me so far:

lspci | grep -i broadcom - hit enter
    wget http://bu3sch.de/b43/fwcutter/b43-fwcutter-011.tar.bz2 {enter}
    tar xjf b43-fwcutter-011.tar.bz2 [enter]
    make [enter]

    wget http://mirror2.openwrt.org/sources/b...0.10.5.tar.bz2 [enter]
    tar xjf broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5.tar.bz2
    b43-fwcutter-011/b43-fwcutter -w "/lib/firmware" broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5/driver/wl_apsta_mimo.o

Thanks, I don't really need, unity was just the default. I installed lubuntu packages following your advice, thanks. Looks good, but is somewhat broken.

    • Keyboard is US only (I need Finnish), likely due the lxkeymap failure
      https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ap/+bug/945603
    • It always starts with something failing, likely something by default in the
launcher bar right after the file browser icon, since it can't show right icon there
(something like "application launcher bar", when you right click on broken icon).
    • Network manager shows no wifi bars, even though wifi is connected and works
    • Sound logo neither shows sound level, it's also just greyed out
    • Something else also messy in the bar, some garbled area on the right corner between nm-applet and battery status. I don't know what should be there, need to try on x86 sometimes to see what's missing.

Of course, only important one of those is the keyboard which is wrong.

This I tried the way described in PPC FAQ, but it didn't work. I tried setting
    Code:
     radeon.modeset=0 video=radeonfb:1440x900-24@60
while in yaboot, but it didn't apply. I haven't yet put effort into figuring out why. The missing suspend is really a blocker.

Re: Testers needed for PowerPC 12.04

Suspend: What you are trying only works when the framebuffers are built in (which they are currently not in 12.04). You need to follow the advice of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ#H...rnel_module.3F

The crossed out icon on the panel is chromium (no chromium on PowerPC). Just change it to firefox.

Any other problems I suggest you report to the lubuntu-qa mailing list. See earlier posts in this thread about lubuntu-qa.

Re: Testers needed for PowerPC 12.04

Can people start putting some heat (i.e. click the affects me link) on this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...er/+bug/958839 please? It is quite an important one!

If somebody has installed from the alternate CD can they also add the contents of their /etc/kernel-img.conf file to the bug report please?

    Thanks!
