It seem my installation crash at installing libc-bin at Select and install Software step or just after. I have test with offline and online install with the same alternate cd booted on usb.

Hope the bug was already corrected. ^_^

Re: Testers needed for PowerPC 12.04

This might be a general problem between all flavours of ubuntu ppc and yaboot:

Even with a fresh install (of lubuntu 12.04) which still came with kernel 3.2.0-16 the
update to 3.2.0-17 didn't pass like expected:

The 3 files (symlinks!) vmlinux, initrd.img and initrd.img.old were put
on the mount level ( / ) and not into /boot where they should be to
point to the newer kernel. I've to do that by hand. Frankly, in Debian
    that problem never happened.

The same happened already with an installation of the beginning of febr.

PS. On Debian i read an interesting thread that explained it would be not so difficult to use grub instead of yaboot which would makes things much easier (they said - frankly, i'm feeling not really sufficiently knowledged to tweak this things by my own )

In addition to what i wrote in my previous post: The vmlinux-3.2.0-17-powerpc which was installed by the upgrade had the wrong rights:

    Owner: root (correct)
    Group: root
    Rights
    Owner: read & write (correct)
Group: nothing (wrong: should be read only)
Others: nothing (wrong: should be read only) After correcting that (as root, obviously) boot into 3.2.0-17 works.

But, since this error happened the second time i presume there is something wrong with the install/update script for the kernel update.

I can confirm that the kernel image and such got installed to "/" (root) instead of /boot when updating via update-manager. I noticed the problem, and moved the files to where they belong. I haven't had this come up since then though (this was about a week ago).

Has anyone else still having this problem?

Also, I still have the issue of black backgrounds on some popup dialogs (update-manager, for example). I remember reading other people complaining about it, but figured it would have sorted itself out by now.

Re: Testers needed for PowerPC 12.04

The live cd image just hangs after it outputs pbbuttonsd, and after I install from the alternate CD, it hangs after trying to start the wireless (it gives the message to go to the appropriate website and download the drivers, etc, then just sits there).

Now, I'm guessing neither pbbuttonsd or the wireless issue are what is causing 12.04 to hang. Is there some kind of way to get detailed output about what it is doing? (I already press esc during boot up to get the overview of what is loading, etc). Or is there a quick way to change/view the startup script/etc to see what precedes/comes after certain boot events? (Like what comes after pbbuttonsd or the wireless networking setup attempts?)

Re: Testers needed for PowerPC 12.04

Yesterday i tried out lubuntu-12.04-beta1-desktop-powerpc.iso - unfortunately i was unable to install it because of the still persisting black background for most, if not all, applications. So i limit myself to list the problems i noted from playing around with the live-cd:

° The boot screen is still simply black, showing only some lines shortly before starting the display manager (desktop).

° The first thing that happens then is, you're prompted with the msg that a program crashed and if you would like to report (it's the notification daemon).

° Alt-Ctrl-F1 (trough F6) works, but it brings me to a completely messed up, unreadable console screen. Alt-Ctrl-F7 brings me back correctly to the dektop.

° The background of many (all?) programs is black, the text of the not activated (greyed) options often is unreadable, which makes it difficult to setup things (e.g. working with the network manager).

° The networkmanager does not give the symbol of wireless (or wired) in the panel but only an empty space. Clicking it activates the configure window (as usual).

For the moment, i desisted from installing because actually i don't have a second computer here and i didn't want to mess up the working debian - lxde setup i've running because of the difficult control of the installer.

Unfortunately i don't know how to do a bug report regarding the black background. I'm only able to describe, what i see

Re: Testers needed for PowerPC 12.04

    Hello Guys!

I hope i have found the right thread.
I am trying to install an Apple Xserve G5 PowerPc with Ubuntu.

I tried 10.04, 11.04, 11.10 an all stopped at some point.

Now i was testing with 12.04 daily desktop.
But like this other person I am having trouble with the harddisks (for reasons of keeping a backup till the installation has proven to work i only inserted one of the tree identical harddiks in the left slot) - the installer says sth bout "megaraid" and thats ist.

Link to the imho related post:
    http://ubuntulinuxgethelp.com/2012/0...n-a-g5-no-joy/

I will try downloading your "test" iso and give it a try now.
Would be great if you could help us!

    Yours,
    Andreas

    Edit:
I encountered my problem: I removed the "lsi megaraid" pci card completely and attached the disks directly onto the mainboard.
Now its working like a charm.

    My (!) Problem solved!
