Thought it'd be handy to compile a thread with online resources for new Linux users who want to learn the command line. I'll link it in my signature.

I am wondering if there is a terminal utility that would color code one space 2 spaces dashes etc I have a hard time seeing the spaces and screwing up commands

Here's a few to start with.

Linuxcommand.org- An entire interactive website devoted to the command line.

Teach Yourself Unix in 24 Hours- PDF of an excellent book that I used when I first started.

Tux Files- Aimed especially at new users.

Learn Linux 101- Introduction to the shell.

Whatever resources you've used or would recommend to new beginners, post them here!

Thank you very much for taking the initiative to do this. I made it a sticky.

My advice is:

1. The best way to learn the command line is to use the command line. Most tasks can be done form the command line.

2. Learn to read the man pages. They are also available on line here:

http://manpages.ubuntu.com/

3. Learn sed, grep, awk, regular expressions, and vim =)

I'd say feel free to post as many links as you want. It'd be nice to avoid duplicates if possible, so scan over a little bit before posting.
I wish I'd had something like this when I started out, myself.

I know you said online resources cortman, but I thought that I'd add a couple of books I bought when I was starting out. I learn best from physical books, so for anyone else like me;

I started with "Linux for Dummys" then went out and added the "Linux pocket guide" as a very useful, now highly worn out reference!

I have added the "Linux; The Complete Reference", but I wouldn't say it's noob friendly in the least - I often find myself re-reading bits 3 years on!

I got bought the Haynes Manual for Ubuntu Linux for my birthday last year - I knew a lot of it by then, but if anything I would now advise this a the place to start - an excellent intro!
