    Issues with Samba & Ubuntu Server Configuration

    I've been building Linux servers for years, but mostly LAMP web servers. I don't do much sysadmin work anymore, but thought I could build a Linux NAS instead of buying a license for Windows Server. I'm having some serious issues getting it to work and am about to pull my hair out.

    SETUP:
    Dell PowerEdge 2950
    2x 72GB SAS 15k RAID 1
    4x 500 GB SATA 7200 RAID 5
    Ubuntu 11.10 Server
    Static IP


    PROBLEM:

    Installed (via apt-get) and configured Samba using tutorial I found in Ubuntu docs. Configured several shares last week, configuration at bottom of post.

    Opened up firewall using UFW. Opened both ports and Samba specific commands.

    Half the time I can't see or connect to the Samba share at all. When I try to access via windows machine via \\SERVERNAME or \\IPADDRESS it gives me an error message. Same via IP from my mac. Tinker around with it, restart some services, etc and then it shows up. I'm afraid tomorrow it's going to disappear again. It's happened several times and I don't know if it's a firewall, networking issue, etc.

    Now that I've got it showing up, when I try to connect it just won't accept my username and password. I reset the password using smbpassword just to be sure. I have disabled guest access, so even though I can connect as a guest when I try to access a share I get a permissions error.

    Any thoughts on what is wrong?

    On the server try:

    smbclient -L localhost -U <your samba username>

    You might try a really basic configuration to eliminate any possible problems.

    Also, which ports do you have open?

    The server accepts the user/password when I connect directly from the terminal, but not from my Windows or Mac client. What could that mean? Firewall config below.
