    Fonts in Xubuntu desktop jagged..

I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 Did the fallback to the gnome 2 desktop because that Unity thingy was a pisspoor excuse for a dock.

(I'm an OSX user and thought I would try out Ubuntu on a cheap PC I bought)

So after really loving the fallback to gnome 2 (It runs great--Got it tweaked, etc,etc)..

I installed the Xubuntu desktop.. But my fonts are jagged.. Tried smooth fonting, etc..

Any suggestions? I like that you can use different desktops in Ubuntu but why would my fonts be screwed up?

Did you adjust the settings in Settings->Settings Manager->Appearance->Fonts?

not sure if you are asking if he bumped the settings, and thereby broke his fonts or if he needs to manually tell xubuntu not use jagged fonts?

If the latter, I'd be interested in knowing if he/she got a fix, because I had the same problem.

I have an Acer Aspire One 532h(intel atom 450 processor), and the wubi Unity install is intolerably slow. (2-3 full minutes to switch between notepad++(running on wine) and the default terminal emulator) Tried using gnome 3.0 desktop, also intolerably slow.
Xubuntu seemed to have promising speed, but the fonts across the board were bad enough to seriously contribute to medium term vision loss.
I'd really like to switch forever to linux, but my three attempts to switch this year have been very discouraging. Perhaps my laptop hardware is a really bad sample selection for the ubuntu/xubuntu transition experience. 3 of my classmates have aspire one netbooks running gnome2 and gnome3 fallbacks (the gnome2 has the same integrated graphics card/accelerator(?) as i do, intel GMA3150, processor:atom455) and they are running great.

EDIT: I finally got everything running by...using Ubuntu 10.04LTS!!! Have been linux only user for 2 months now (and have gotten rid of wine entirely). I am hoping that the next long term stable release will address the issues I had in 11.10 with regard to the Acer Aspire One 532h, so that I can continue to grow with Ubuntu. Particularly excited about better default power management.

Not sure what you mean by "bumped the settings", but to configure fonts in xubuntu (xfce), go to the Settings Manager, Appearance, Fonts tab. I would suggest selecting a cleaner-looking font and in the "Rendering" section, enabling "anti-aliasing" and setting "hinting" to slight and "Sub-pixel order" to RGB.

What version of Xubuntu are you running/testing? Was it a clean install or an upgrade from another ubuntu flavour?

    O.K I started with a fresh install of 11.10 on a Compaq CQ56 laptop..

I hated the poor imitation and bad navigation of the so called whatever it was that was trying to be an OSX dock. (yes i gots me a macbook)

So I did the fall back to gnome.. I loves it..still using it..

Installed Xubuntu desktop.. my fonts are blurry and dirty.. and yes I did follow your instructions..

I like how Xubuntu looks.. but I can't use it if I can't read anything ..

Now heres the funny thing.. I took a screenshot in Xubuntu of the blurry.. But when I open the .png up in Gnome classic.. lol sharp and clear..

    Very Interesting..
