I think I'll try this. Why in the world would Ubuntu and Debian pull xserver-xorg-video-nv if there are iMacs out there, like mine, which won't play nicely with the nouveau driver?

The Ubuntu PowerPC FAQ has links for you to read to try and get nouveau working. You need to investigate phantom outputs/mirroring or whatever other wierdness apple imposed on the card. Nobody with a 700/800 iMac has done this as far as I am aware. That is what you should be spending the time on.
That's what I'm planning to do... Debian Sid seems to be a dead-end because their version of nv is for the amd64 and i386 architectures, not powerpc.
