WARNING: Keep the old driver somewhere where you will remember where it is in case X doesn't start up, such as you home folder, so you can type sudo dpkg -i xserver-[tab key] in the commaind line if X dosn't start up.
With updated evdev, both side buttons continue being button 4. I think it's a parallel problem. Can't get much information on it though because their forums are dead.

    Angry old version of xserver-xorg-input-evdev

Thank you, detyabozhye, all works on MX510!
But why we should use xserver-xorg-input-evdev_1.0.0.5-0ubuntu2 ?
Is it bug and was it submitted to Ubuntu bug tracking system?
    Having locked packages is inconveniently...

looking at the very first post of this topic, there's another entry on people's "why I don't switch to Linux" list the magic word is: GUI

Yes, it is a bug and is submitted to the bug tracking system, but so far the bug hasn't been fixed. bug # 43100

What do you mean by "on the pc"? PC is hardware, Windows and Linux are software. I don't know about Windows, but on Linux you can use xbindkeys and xvkbd to achieve that.

Re: MX700 mouse's sidebuttons not recognized

I do not know why, but after a couple of reboots where I didn't change any configurations, it just starting working.
So with the guide, I got these working:
    - MX700 mouse with nVidia 440MX gfxcard.
    - MX500 mouse with Ati Radon R250 gfxcard.

I think he means that one of the downsides to linux is there aren't many apps for setting things up where you check checkboxes, click mouse to bind, etc. You have to know all the commands and what values to give to those commands (sometimes by having to know and perform other commands) to achieve certain functions.
