Will Linux Mint Be the End for Ubuntu?

The main reason that Linux Mint gained so much popularity in 11 "Katya" is that it kept GNOME 2.6.38-x and keeping the plain old GNOME Panel.
With the RC of Linux Mint 12 "Lisa", it includes GNOME Shell and MGSE by default, Unity is avalaible from the repos, will this be the end for Ubuntu?
MGSE and MATE and the lack of overlay scrollbars will appeal to GNOME 2.6.38-x fans, while MGSE can easily be disabled, and Unity installed for those who like the shift from desktop computing. How will Ubuntu fare in Presices Pangolin? How will Linux Mint respond to that?
What do you guys think? Can Ubuntu climb back to be the top distro, or will Linux Mint take over?

Mint won't take over. Mint 12 is just Ubuntu 11.10 with Gnome 3 and a taskbar (with a menu). Most experienced users can turn Ubuntu into what Mint is in about 5 minutes... Mint is what it is - a transition distro for people coming from Windows, or who don't like cutting edge change. But the Mint devs also don't have many resources - where Ubuntu goes they have to follow, so it'll never be more than Ubuntu with a few extras and a minty theme.

Ubuntu is still the top distro by a longshot, and will be for the foreseeable future. Last I heard Ubuntu has 13 million-ish users, Mint likely only has a couple percent of that... Despite the noise made by a some vocal users on these forums, the changes Canonical has made (Unity and all) will likely be very positive for the future of the distro, and lead to increased adoption.

Get over it lol. If you like Mint, use Mint and shush about it. There is no competition in open source.

Unless they definitely move to Debian, no because Mist is still Ubuntu.

If I were a Mintie, I'd be more useful to the cause by clicking away at ads on the Mint forum site or searching for "GNOME 2.6.38-x" using a Mintified search engine. Either raises revenue for Mint. Discussing "GNOME 2.6.38-x" here, doesn't.

Clinging to the past is rarely a way to achieve success in the future.

That said, Mint as an Ubuntu flavor has its place in the scheme of things.

By the looks of things, Mint is leaning more towards Debian based now instead of Ubuntu based.

LMDE has gotten a LOT of attention and a LOT of popularity lately.

No. Ubuntu is still as popular.
    It's been a while!
