    nice post and link
I personally had a night mare with lubuntu.
couldnt run as a live cd / took an age to install / kept freezing.

although when it did run it was rather nice.

once the software manager was installed all was better.

    i have a laptop
    4 gb ram
pentium t6600 dual core and 500gb hdd.
    NO graphic card .

hope it continues to improve though
    yes i'm a nood

Re: Lubuntu Has Breathed New Life Into My Old Machine

I had to go with the slightly more sedate "Agreed" than the more flambouyant "Confirm That!".

In fact, my 256Mb RAM Tosh A100 laptop was turning into a doorstop, it was so useless. A family member was using it and basically got simply fed up with it -- with good reason -- when it was running Win XP.

So, in 2009, I thought I might as well give Ubuntu a go, never having used it before. It was a revelation. The memory limitation was a problem, but the machine actually RAN! Last year I upgraded the memory to 1Gb for £10, and it was that much more usable.

But! I could never update the 9.04 OS. That's where Lubuntu comes into it. It's the only one of the current *buntu's that runs on my machine -- and it runs great! For some reason, the screen refreshing (is that the right word?) seems slower than Jaunty, and there a couple tiny annoyances. But it has stable audio (for me, 9.04 was very flakey for audio), and can be updated.

    Good times!

I am charging him for the extra memory and replacement HD, but it's like he is getting a new computer for $60, thanks to Lubuntu!

Thank YOU for using and choosing Lubuntu

Re: Lubuntu Has Breathed New Life Into My Old Machine

I think we're all pretty agreed that Lubuntu rocks big style. It's a marvellous thing on low powered hardware. I'm really pleased that Canonical decided to put the official stamp on it. It deserves it.

The only thing I would ask would be to trim the disk size demands of the next one. I was really surprised that Lubu 11.10 required a disk size bigger than 11.04. Our Eee 701 only has a tiny 3.8Gb hard drive, and I had to use the alternative installer to get it onto the system. This was mostly fine, but I could imagine it being a little tricky for a newcomer.

But that is the only request I have. Other than that it's rock and rolling on our Eee. It's tailor made!

I am using Lubuntu 11.10 for my old Dell Latitude laptop, an PIII 500mHz with 384MB of memory and 40GB HDD. It is in daily use now by the children of my sister in law. I would have preferred Xubuntu, but the sound nm256 did not work and it worked in Lubuntu

Isn't Lubuntu a unique master piece?

Re: Lubuntu Has Breathed New Life Into My Old Machine

I clicked on "Confirm" and "Lubuntu's my fave."

    Here's the rig: Abit KN8 Ultra V1.1 mobo, AMD 3200 64-bit single core 2GHz processor, 3 GB RAM, 7200 RPM 250 GB HD, and a Radeon 4670.

I've used a pretty good stack of distros on this machine since building it in 2005? 2006? Maybe 2007? Not sure. Back then, Socket 939 processors were still available and moderately competitive, Microsoft was still supporting Windows 2000, and multi-core processors were the New Hotness. I've tried most of the major desktops at one time or another (Gnome 2.x, KDE 4.x, XFCE once or twice, LXDE of course, and a couple of customized openbox desktops, Ubuntu's Unity, and even fluxbox for a few months). I've used Debian Squeeze Stable (base of #! 10), Ubuntu from 8.10 forward, Mint from 6 forward, Salix 13.01 and 13.37, openSUSE 11.1, and PCLOS 2010 KDE (kept current until a month or so ago).

I can tell the difference. LXDE is noticeably faster than KDE or Unity (which hangs for me at times) and has a smaller footprint than Gnome 2.x. My XFCE usage has been very minimal though I had no trouble with it, but there's just something about LXDE I prefer -- perhaps it's the difference between PCManFM and Thunar, and perhaps it's just familiarity.

Ubuntu-based distros are easiest to set up now that I have the Radeon, and of the distros and spins built from Ubuntu, I like Lubuntu best. If I go back into WoW, it will probably be my primary distro (though I will probably try openSUSE 12.1 as well).
