I have a 9600 GT. When I installed it, I used the included cable to go from the audio-out header on my motherboard, to the video card. That way, the sound is available on the HDMI.
So, it just depends on whether the person who installed your video card also installed the cable.
It is working now.
The problem was that the SPDIF cable was wrongly connected to the SPDIF_IN on the motherboard.
Once I connected it to the OUT, it is working.
Please, can someone send pictures of that cable for connecting motherboard & graphic card.

Note that not very many of these video cards have the spdif box header.
All depends on the vendor..
The cable is just a 2 wire approx. twisted pair with 2x0.1" wiremount socket each end.
Think it is the same as the digital audio link from older optical drives.
